Still Having Fun Getting Fit!

Thirty students at Bicester Community College are happily into their second term of the College’s new ‘Have Fun, Get Fit’ lunchtime club and are still feeling more happy and healthy than they have before and seeing significant results!

Initiated by Sarah Calnan, Second in PE, this club aimed to attract students who wanted to feel better about themselves and their fitness levels. The Club meets twice a week at the recently refurbished Bicester Leisure Centre to discuss healthy weight ranges, healthy eating and exercising to achieve good fitness levels.

This week Bicester’s Fresh Direct donated a range of unusual fruit and vegetables to the group so that they could experience food they might never have considered before. The range included black truffle potatoes, figs, lychees, white asapargus, black carrots and many other exotic variations of vegetables. The group’s first task was to identify what the fruit or vegetable was in the form of a quiz. The highest score achieved was 28 out of 31 (which greatly impressed the staff!). The students then were asked to choose a fruit or vegetable to take home with them, to find out more about it, find a recipe that used it , to make a meal using it and to take a photograph of the end product! This was an excellent opportunity to think about how we can cook vegetables to make them more appealing and the group had a great deal of fun looking at the various recipe options on the internet. Although there may not be a mad rush to buy white horseradish, many students were pleased with what they had cooked for the first time and would look to make these dishes again.

Sarah Calnan was delighted with the enthusiasm of her students and their willingness to try highly unusual fruit and vegetables ‘we all really enjoyed getting to know these fruit and vegetables better and have learned more about how to incorporate them into our diets. A big thank you goes to Fresh Direct for their generosity and continued support for our ‘Have Fun, Get Fit’ club’
