Student Council

The Student Council at Bicester Community College plays an important role in the daily life of students at the College. It voices the opinions and concerns of students and undertakes a variety of initiatives to support the student community.

The Student Council comprises four representatives from each year group plus the Sixth Form leadership team. The representatives are elected and these elections are usually held in the first few weeks of the new academic year. The Student Council also has representatives that sit on the Bicester Youth Council and therefore has an input into events and projects in Bicester too. The Council meets every half term when Form Representatives (two from each form) also attend in order that they can relate the information from the meeting to their peers throughout the College.

The Student Council is involved in a number of different projects throughout the course of the academic year including:

  • Fundraising for Children In Need by arranging organised activities
  • Organising and running the Summer Fete for the incoming Year 7s in July
  • Taking part in events organised by external bodies.

At present the Council is looking at ways to save energy around the College (lights off, computers off etc) and recently worked hard to lobby for recycling in the College.

One of the roles of the Student Council at Bicester Community College is to provide support for students in the College. Through the Student Supporters’ mentoring scheme, members of the Council act as befrienders to the New Year 7 students. In the summer term students are trained to start their student supporter’s role in September. These students are mainly from Year 11 and also some from the Sixth Form. The Student Supporters visit their allocated Form at least once a week and read with students, help organise them and check equipment. The idea behind this is that no new student should feel that they are on their own or without friends; if there are any issues then the Student Council can let a member of staff know so that the situation can be monitored. To make students feel at home there is The Drop In Centre which is a lunch club for invited Year 7 students who might find the playground initially overwhelming. It is run by Student Supporters and whilst there the students can do homework, chat, read or just relax.
